Influences

I have many different influences but would have to say that, musically, Outkast are my main influence for their ability to create original music and digress from stereotypical hip hop. Their level of versatility is also something I am looking to achieve. From the UK, I would have to say Ghetto purely for his lyrical ability. Kanye West is the only other person I can say has influenced me to be honest.

Andre 3000′s ability to destroy the barriers of a genre that we all seem to try and squeeze him into is what most allured me towards his music. His extensive range of being able to sing, rap and play instruments and having successful songs that intertwine with elements of rock, jazz, soul and gospel are all evident through his music. I believe this is what gives birth to his creativity and it’s his daring attitude to “breakout” from the past shackles of a stereotype that he had to start in to get to where he is today. This is what most relates to me personally. Being confined to the genre of grime I’ve always attempted to steer away from being standard, but the environment constantly pulled me back in. Now, I feel liberated and able to venture into any genre, style and way of expressing music and myself.

Jamie Foxx’s amazing stage presence and improvised personality also heavily inspires me. The overwhelming confidence and charisma he has, sometimes never fully rehearsed just spur of the moment, shows his personality and breaks down the separation of artist and human. Also his ability to fuse comedy with his songwriting abilities is a skill I admire and can connect with, as it’s something I often unknowingly do. So to see such a talented and successful individual not hiding this natural gift has inspired me to not be afraid to be myself and be a little crazy on stage rather than being set in my ways. I want to be more than just a studio artist, authentic creativity is something that can’t be staged.
